Paris Saint-Germain Achraf Hakimi is still grateful to Inter for having put their faith in him when they signed him in the summer of 2020.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca in an interview published in today’s print edition, the Moroccan spoke about the importance of his development in his single season with the Nerazzurri.

Hakimi joined Inter from Real Madrid in 2020 having impressed during his two seasons on loan with Borussia Dortmund, and the Nerazzurri had identified him as a key man for their right side.

The wing-back was a crucial player in the Nerazzurri’s first Scudetto win in eleven seasons, but he left after just one season as the club had to make money in the transfer market to make up for a difficult financial situation.

The 23-year-old’s time with the Nerazzurri was bittersweet for how it ended, but also enormously impactful and successful on the pitch, and the player remains grateful for the chance he was given to shine.

“My departure [from Madrid] was the result of two things,” he explained, “my lack of maturity and a lack of trust on the part of the club.”

“When you arrive at Madrid from the Castilla it’s normal for the club not to instantly put all their faith in you because you’re a young player,” he added.

“But then, after two great seasons on loan at Dortmund, Real continued not to want to put their trust in me,” he went on, “even though I could continue to play at a high level.”

“Finally, when I left Inter, there was also an option Madrid had to buy me that they didn’t exercise, so they simply didn’t want to bet on me,” he continued.

“And I’m happy because I don’t think that these clubs were wrong to put their trust in me,” he said of Borussia Dortmund and Inter.
