Legendary former Inter goalkeeper Walter Zenga had hoped that he could return as a coach at the Nerazzurri in his career, but no longer feels that this is a possibility.

Speaking to Amazon Prime Video, Zenga spoke of being realistic with himself that even though coaching the Nerazzurri would be an ambition, he is not in the running for the position of head coach.

Zenga established himself as one of the Nerazzurri’s greatest every goalkeepers during his playing days, and his status as a club icon could have made him a potential candidate for head coach at the club.

However, others have always been selected for the position, and for the moment it hardly looks as though a coach like Simone Inzaghi would be displaced from his position.

Were Inzaghi to leave, however, it is not likely that Zenga would be among the names considered to take over from him.

“I would have liked to coach Inter,” he reflected, “but I gave up on that dream. It’s a thing of the past, you have to be honest with yourself.”

“I’ve been close to doing so a couple of times,” he added. “At times, I imagined myself on the bench jumping for joy after winning a derby.”

He also spoke about current Nerazzurri boss Inzaghi, stating that “Simone had been at Lazio for five years with Lotito, it’s not easy to manage certain things in that job – in Rome, for example, if you lose a derby they berate you for six months.”

“Inzaghi arrived in Milan not to rebuild, but to add two or three of his own ideas to the team,” he added. “Inter have nothing missing from them, they’re a team that play good football, dominant, who go seventy minutes without having to suffer.”

“If the forwards don’t score, the defenders score,” he added. “They’re a complete team, Simone is fortunate to have inherited a team that grew a lot during its two years with Conte. Now they must take the next step in Europe.”

Comparing Inzaghi to Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp, he said that “Both are tough, they have charisma, personality, everything a top coach must have.”
