Former Inter and AC Milan defender Thomas Helveg feels that his two old teams are fairly evenly matched in the Scudetto race, but that the Nerazzurri could have the advantage because of their experience.

Speaking to Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport in an interview published in today’s print edition, the 50-year-old emphasized the role that having already won the Scudetto could play in making them more able to cope with the pressure.

Inter find themselves one point behind their city rivals in the Serie A table, albeit with a game in hand, and they will know that the Scudetto race could drag out to the very end of the season.

The Rossoneri showed all their quality to beat Inter in the derby in a match that tightened up the race significantly, and are in good form broadly speaking.

However, the Nerazzurri are Italian champions, and Helveg feels that this could well prove to be the decisive factor in allowing them to navigate the run-in to the title.

“I would say they’re on the same level,” he said of the two Milan sides. “Inter won the title last season, it means that mentally they know what it takes to repeat the feat.”

“Winning begets winning,” he explained, “the mentality can prove fundamental. But also don’t underestimate Milan’s hunger, that could also make the difference.”
