Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi knows that his teammates are underdogs against Liverpool in the Champions League, but he still expects a competitive match.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Amazon Prime, the coach stressed how his team can defy the expectations for the match on paper and have every chance of getting the better of their rivals on the night.

The Reds are among the most difficult opponents who Inter could face in the Champions League round of sixteen, with the Premier League side having won all six of their group stage matches including two emphatic victories over AC Milan.

However, the Nerazzurri have also shown throughout the season that they are capable of imposing their game no matter the opposition, and will head into the clash with a confident attitude.

The coach is looking forward to seeing how his players fare against one of the best sides that Europe has to offer.

“It will be a great evening to experience,” Inzaghi said, “I’m happy for the fans, the club, and the guys.”

He added that “We’re facing a team of a high calibre, we start at 0-0, they’re probably the favourites on paper but it will be attention to detail that makes all the difference.”

“We come off the back of matches against Milan and Napoli where we only got a point, but we showed our class nevertheless,” he went on.

“Against Liverpool we’ll have to concentrate as we always do,” he added, “considering they can create big problems for you in every area of the pitch.”

Of the absences from injury and suspension in the team, the coach said that “I’d have been happy not to deal with them, but we know that when playing so often it’s difficult to have all the players available.”

Of the atmosphere at the San Siro, he said that “At 50% capacity it’s not quite the same, even though our fans are magnificent. We would have liked 100% because we know that the fans would have been one more weapon for us.”
