Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi feels that his team gave a very good account of themselves against Liverpool in the Champions League despite losing 2-0 in the end.
Speaking to InterTV after the match, the coach stressed the quality of the performance and lamented that they were not able to make the most of their best spells to take an advantage to Anfield.
Neither Inter nor Liverpool looked content to sit back in the first half, which was back-and-forth and saw both teams enjoy periods in the ascendancy.
Immediately after the restart it was Inzaghi’s men who looked to be in control of the tempo and likelier to score, but then the Reds found a foothold with some substitutions by Jurgen Klopp, and opened the scoring from a corner.
Things got even worse for Inter when Liverpool scored a second through a deflected Mohamed Salah effort, but Inzaghi was still pleased with the quality of the Nerazzurri’s performance.
“I congratulated the team because we played a great game,” he said. “Unfortunately we were not rewarded with the result based on our efforts in the first half and the first 25 minutes of the second.”
He added that “The team would have deserved more, but it must be a starting point for improvement, and we must be proud of what we did. We’ve accepted the result, it was a good evening anyway.”
“We played against one of the strongest teams in Europe who in the last two years won the Champions League and the Premier League,” the coach stressed, “we played it on equal terms but we were unable to turn it in our favour.”
“Their header ended up just one centimeter inside the post, and ours just one outside,” he emphasized. “This is football and it must serve as a motivation to come back even stronger.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s important Serie A clash with Sassuolo, Inzaghi said that “We must be organized for that match because they’re a team that play good football, are well-organized, and we will have to prepare ourselves in the best possible way in these few days.”
