Inter defender Milan Skriniar feels that despite a strong performance against Liverpool in the Champions League, the Nerazzurri were punished by how things went in the key moments.
Speaking to Amazon Prime Video, the 26-year-old emphasized that in games at the highest level, teams must find ways to make the details go their way, and he and his teammates failed to do this against the Reds.
The Nerazzurri had many positive spells of possession and created decent opportunities to score, but never managed to find the decisive goal to take to to Anfield and give themselves a foothold in the tie.
Meanwhile, despite putting their bodies on the line on numerous occasions when the Reds looked to be creating danger, it was a switch-off at the back which allowed Liverpool substitute Roberto Firmino to head home an opener that left the Nerazzurri’s quarter-final hopes teetering.
“We wanted to win in front of our fans,” Skriniar said. “We had a good match, but the details are what decide matches in the Champions League. We failed to clear two set pieces and conceded two goals.”
On the second leg in three weeks’ time, he said that “It will be very difficult, but we have shown that we can play against anyone. We have to go there and try everything we can to get something out of it.”
