Inter defender Denzel Dumfries has said that playing for Inter is a dream and Euro 2020 is where he feels the world noticed him, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.

Speaking during the Careers series on Inter TV, via FCInternews, the Dutch wing back opened up on his experience representing The Netherlands at EURO 2020 last summer, shortly before his move to Inter happened.

He feels that that is when the world began to see how good a player he is and can become.

“Yes, the world there noticed Dumfries. It was an unforgettable experience representing my country at the European Championships. Scoring two goals is a very important achievement, I was very happy.

“After the European Championship, I realized that everyone knew me, many watch this tournament. It was a key moment, I think I have made a great leap in quality as a player.”

Denzel Dumfries’ first real experience of Inter was in a Champions League match when he played against The Nerazzurri for PSV Eindhoven. He joked that he had the beating of Ivan Perisic that day.

“Ah, yes, I destroyed Perisic in this match. I’m kidding, he gets angry. PSV was another special club for me, I played there for three years. It was very nice to play against Inter, I’m grateful to PSV for that experience: it’s a beautiful club, the people are very nice.

“I made my Dutch debut in my time at PSV. Then they also gave me the captain’s armband, a very prestigious thing for me. It was a very important role, especially during the lockdown because I had to discuss with the Board of Directors, with the team. I learned a lot about myself as a person too.”

When asked if he ever thought at that stage he would be in the same team as Ivan Perisic, he admitted that he dos think it’s special that it panned out that way.

“I don’t know, 2018 was an important year, in the Champions League, we played at Camp Nou, at Wembley and also at San Siro, the best for the atmosphere. For us it was crazy, we were all impressed. And to think that today I play with him is special.”

Denzel Dumfries and Hakan Calhanoglu are very close friends off of the pitch and he revealed that their children actually play together.

“He’s a very good person, it’s very nice to be his teammate. He’s always helped me, he’s a lot of fun. Off the pitch we hang out, our children play together.”

Finally, when talking about his move to Inter, Denzel Dumfries said: “Yes, it’s a dream, a very special time for me.”
