Inter defender Stefan de Vrij feels that the Nerazzurri must learn from their mistakes in their Serie A defeat to Sassuolo this evening at the San Siro.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN after the match, the 30-year-old spoke about needing to look back on the match and see where they went wrong to ensure that they do not continue making the same mistakes going forward.

The Nerazzurri will have seen this match as an opportunity to take advantage of AC Milan’s dropped points yesterday away to Salernitana and reclaim the top position in the table, but instead they fell further behind their city rivals by a point.

Things can get even worse should Napoli beat Cagliari tomorrow, which would mean that the Nerazzurri would be third in the table albeit with a game in hand.

The result stings, but the team can hardly afford to dwell on it and must quickly figure out how to ensure that they get back to their best quickly.

“Obviously we’re feeling negative,” de Vrij said. “In the first half we did very badly, we took the wrong approach. We weren’t good.”

Of the team’s approach he said that “It’s inexplicable, you can’t start a game the way we did where they get four quick chances due to our simple mistakes.”

“Too many balls lost,” he added, “they were good at counterattacking. We need to analyze and learn so that things like this don’t happen anymore.”

“It will be very important to bounce back immediately and win away to Genoa,” he added. “These games are now in the past – we need to analyze, learn, and do better in our next games.”

And on the team’s defensive problems, he stated that “We have to improve when we attack and stay more balanced.”

“We need organization to attack in an ordered way,” he added. “Even today we made too many mistakes in possession, and we allowed them to counter with long balls.”
