Sassuolo striker Gianluca Scamacca was happy with his goal for the Neroverdi in their shock 2-0 win over Inter this evening, but didn’t initially celebrate because he had been offside when he scored.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN after the match, the 23-year-old denied that his lack of an initial reaction had anything to do with a rumoured summer move to the Nerazzurri but simply reflected the fact that he assumed the strike wouldn’t stand.

Sassuolo had already raced to an early lead in the first half at the San Siro as the Nerazzurri looked unable to cope with their fast transition attacks, but they still searched for a second goal to start to feel more secure in their lead.

Scamacca, who had been key to the Neroverdi’s play all match, was the one to get on the end of it, latching onto a Hamed Junior Traore cross to find the back of the net for 2-0.

Ivan Perisic immediately appealed for the offside flag in the hope that the striker had been just the wrong side of Federico Dimarco as the last man, and as it turns out, Scamacca had the same initial thought.

When asked if he had refrained from an immediate celebration due to expecting a move to Inter, he replied “No, not at all, I didn’t celebrate because I thought I was offside.”

Looking back on the win he said that “We’ve had a lot of good evenings this season, but the three points were important today, especially against a very strong team and one of the title favourites.”
