Inter were not able to get any kind of foothold in the midfield battle against Sassuolo as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat yesterday.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, who highlight these issues in central areas as the key to the Nerazzurri’s third Serie A defeat of the season.

Inter were without midfielder Marcelo Brozovic against the Neroverdi, with the Croat serving a one-match suspension for accumulation of yellow cards.

The Nerazzurri normally rely on the 29-year-old to set the tempo and keep things ticking over precisely as they look to dominate the ball and play with an aggressive high defensive line.

Without the Croat, the team turned the ball over too many times and were unable to really put their stamp on the game in midfield, with Neroverdi midfielder Maxime Lopez instead the player who looked the most composed.

With Brozovic, the Nerazzurri have a point of reference in midfield, but evidently without him the entire team seems unsure of what they need to be doing to make their entire tactical system work.
