Former Inter midfielder Sabri Lamouchi feels that the Nerazzurri are still the favourites for the Serie A title, and that being knocked out of the Champions League could allow them to focus on the league.

Speaking to Italian news outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, the former midfielder noted the potential for Inter tobecome more focused on their Scudetto should they no longer have the distraction of European competition.

Inter have a second leg in two weeks’ time in which to try and overturn the 2-0 deficit from last week’s first leg round of sixteen clash against Liverpool, not an impossible task but certainly difficult especially given the quality of the opposition.

Should the Nerazzurri fail to turn the tie around and drop out of the Champions League, then they will only have Serie A and the Coppa Italia left to play in.

With their focus shifted entirely to domestic competition, it could be the case that the Nerazzurri can reserve their energy to fight for the Scudetto rather than having more European knockout ties to think about.

“Inter remain the favourites,” he said of the Scudetto race, adding that “if they go out of the Champions League, then they could focus more on the league.”
