Serie A could be won by a team with a total of fewer than eighty points picked up this season, with no team currently on course to finish much higher than that.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper La Repubblica, who note that none of the teams in this campaign’s Scudetto race are on track for more than 82 points for the end of the season.

Inter, AC Milan, and Napoli are locked in a tight race at the top of the Serie A table, but as the trio’s struggles over the weekend illustrated, none look to be in truly top form.

Compared to last season, when Inter won the title in emphatic fashion with 92 points, and to the run of Scudetti won by Juventus in which the Bianconeri routinely finished on close to or more than ninety points, this looks unusual.

Inter or either of their two main rivals for the title could well pick up significantly in form and reach ninety points or thereabouts over the run-in, but if they continue as they’ve been doing that Serie A could have it’s lowest points-collecting champion since the Rossoneri won with 82 points during the 2010-11 season.
