Former Inter midfielder Fausto Pizzi feels that current Nerazzurri striker Lautaro Martinez has the quality to quickly get past his dip in form and become prolific in front of goal against.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster TMW Radio, he backed the Argentine to finish the season with around twenty goals once he gets his shooting boots back.

Martinez has found the back of the net just once, from the penalty spot, in his past eleven matches, a drastic decline from his strike rate earlier in the campaign.

The 24-year-old’s individual form has coincided with and been part of the reason for the poor form by the team as a whole, and seeing him get back to his best will be vital for the Nerazzurri get their Scudetto charge back on track.

Pizzi feels that given what the striker has shown throughout his Nerazzurri career, however, he can be expected to get back to his usual level soon.

“Lautaro is a striker who gives a lot,” he said, “he works hard for the team and it’s normal that he’s not always ruthless in front of goal,” he said.

“But tactically he gives everything,” he added. “He can pay for this in the penalty area. Sometimes then there are periods where the ball just doesn’t want to go in the net for a striker, like against Sassuolo.”

Pizzi stated that “I’m convinced that he will finish with close to goals. As for his quality there’s no doubting it. He knows how to score goals in important moments.”

He further said that “All the teams are sitting back against Inter, their style of play has changed, they raised their defensive line and they can find the route to goal blocked. Last year they played more on the break.”
