Chelsea centre-back Andreas Christensen is expected to reach an agreement to extend his contract with the club, ending Inter’s hopes of landing him on a free transfer.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Nerazzurri had been tracking the Denmark international with a view to a move in the summer, when his existing deal expires.

The 25-year-old has been offered a four-year extension with the option of a fifth, and the wage proposals are in line with what he currently earns, although he had hoped for better terms. However, it is still expected that a renewal is the most likely outcome.

Fellow Premier League club Newcastle United had hoped to lure Christensen to St. James’ Park with better personal terms, but the player is keen to join an already established team that can fight for honours immediately.

Elsewhere, Barcelona had also hoped to propose a four-year deal but may not be able to match the financial incentives of other clubs, and are expected to focus their attention on Christensen’s Chelsea teammate Cesar Azpilicueta.
