Inter coach Simone Inzaghi could turn to midfielder Matias Vecino in a similar role to the one that Sergej Milinkovic-Savic played at Lazio under him as he looks to re-configure the Nerazzurri’s stuttering attack.

This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, who suggest the use of the Uruguayan as a physical and aerially strong out-ball as an option for the Nerazzurri.

Inter struggled to really bypass the well-organized defensive pressing of Genoa in yesterday’s goalless Serie A draw, playing it around the back but failing to get many decisive forwarded passes and runs out of their usual midfield trio.

This meant that for all their possession, the Nerazzurri had to mostly settle for half-chances at best, and rarely looked like they had any ideas to unlock the Griffone.

When coach Inzaghi had been in charge of the Biancocelesti, he regularly made use of Milinkovic-Savic as a target for long balls, and the coach could decide to take a similar approach when faced with teams who force Inter to hit it long regularly as Genoa did.

Vecino is the midfielder with the closest profile to Milinikovic-Savic in this regard among Inter’s players in the position, and the 30-year-old was in fact turned to towards the end of yesterday’s match.

The former Empoli and Fiorentina midfielder has not featured all that regularly this season, but according to Tuttosport he could be given a more prominent role as a Plan B for Inzaghi’s team in possession.
