Italian journalist Mario Sconcerti believes that Inter’s mediocre recent form, along with their rivals at the top of the Serie A table, represents a wider trend among the big Italian teams.

Writing in his column in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, Sconcerti noted that the Nerazzurri are ten points back from where they were at this stage of last season but that this is also true of all the top sides.

The Nerazzurri have had their most significant stumble in form of the season in February, dropping points in all four of their Serie A matches while they also lost to Liverpool in the Champions League and picked up their only win in the Coppa Italia against Roma.

The difficult month has meant that Inter are no longer on pace for a points total in the same region as the 92 that they won the Scudetto with last season.

“The efforts of Milan and Inter continue,” Sconcerti writes. “This season looks like a kind of long game where everyone is at a handicap.”

“Overall, Inter have ten points fewer than this time last season,” he continues. “When we thought that summer sales would weigh on them, we weren’t very wrong.”

“There has been a drop-off at the top in general,” he ads. “Juve and Atalanta have five points fewer compared to last season, Roma nine less, Milan are the same, and Lazio a point less.”
