AC Milan should have been awarded a penalty in the second half of yesterday evening’s Coppa Italia semi-final first leg against Inter according to Italian media.

The assessment of the challenge by Nerazzurri defender Milan Skriniar on Rossoneri striker Olivier Giroud in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport is that it should have gone to VAR and been awarded as a spot kick.

Skriniar looked to have been having a tough time dealing with Giroud on the incident, and had both of his hands around the Frenchman who fell to the ground under the contact.

Referee Maurizio Mariani saw the incident and did not see there being enough in it to award a penalty, while the VAR did not intervene to reverse his decision.

However, in the view of the Corriere, this was a failing particularly on the part of the video assistant who had the chance to watch the incident back several times.
