Inter and AC Milan took the night off from their Scudetto fight to face each other in the Coppa Italia yesterday, but this doesn’t mean that the match doesn’t send worrying signals about the Serie A title race.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, who argue that yesterday’s goalless derby draw was a “wake-up call for the Scudetto” for the Nerazzurri in particular.

Inter went into yesterday’s match on the back of four matches without a win in Serie A, and even though they’ll have to wait until hosting Salernitana on Friday to get three points in the league one way or another the derby was still an opportunity.

A win, or at least an emphatic display, against city rivals Milan would be a source of renewed confidence and would send a message to the Rossoneri in the league as well as other rivals Napoli, Atalanta, and Juventus.

Instead, the Nerazzurri’s display was their most toothless in attack yet on their increasingly lengthy run of poor form, and it was the Rossoneri who dictated more of the tempo of the match.

Neither side necessarily looked like Scudetto contenders based on their performances, but for Inter in particular, the match will have been a further worrying sign of their form heading into the run-in.
