Inter and AC Milan have faced each other in semi-final matches in the Coppa Italia in 1985, and in the Champions League in 2003 before facing off yesterday in the first leg of the Coppa semi-final.

Yesterday’s semi-final derby ended in a goalless draw, and as it turns out, this is par for the course when the two city rivals meet in this stage of a competition.

As football statistics account Opta pointed out in a tweet, the 1985 semi-final as well as both legs of the 2003 tie also ended in draws.

They wrote, “4 – AC Milan and Inter have drawn each of their last four meetings in the semi-final stage of a competition (1-1 in the Coppa Italia in 1985, 0-0 and 1-1 in the Champions League in 2003, 0-0 tonight). Balance.”
