Inter assistant coach Massimiliano Farris has said that the 5-0 win over Salernitana shows that Inter had hit a mental block rather than a physical issue, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.

Speaking during an interview with DAZN after the match in place of Simone Inzaghi who had lost his voice, via FCInternews, Massimiliano Farris explained what had been behind Inter’s poor recent form.

Many felt that the team had become tired after a congested schedule and couldn’t maintain their levels of performance. Massimiliano Farris says the data did not show that.

“This victory sweeps away doubts more in the external environment than in our thoughts. We know our strength, especially our forwards: tonight’s game confirms our data that did not indicate any physical decline.

“Evidently, there was no time to recover mentally given the many close and very important matches. We weren’t able to prepare for the matches very well.”

Lautaro Martinez has been in poor form and has suffered a lot personally as a result of that. Massimiliano Farris says he has been suffering because he cares so much about the shirt.

“Yes, because he cares a lot about this shirt and because he always wants to help his teammates. This group is very compact and I think we saw that with the first goal and the group hug.

“Then a newcomer enters like Gosens and everyone goes to him to underline the assist for Dzeko’s goal. We are calm, this is a good performance.”

Nicolo Barella has also been in poor form but what impressive for the Nerazzurri tonight.

“Another player who cares a lot about this shirt and who had the burden of not being able to perform as he knows how to do. He said ‘I’m doing everything wrong’, and we told him to start with simple things, without wasting unnecessary energy.”

When asked what recent criticism of Inter annoyed him the most, Massimiliano Farris reiterated his point about the data not showing a physical decline.

“We know that we are a big team that must do well in Italy and in Europe. But the numbers are the same against Genoa and Sassuolo, but then it is clear that the results guide the judgments.

“But I repeat, the data in our possession did not show any kind of decline, apart from the results. It is difficult to recover energy with so many close matches. And then maybe there is a lack of confidence.”

Napoli and AC Milan are playing each other on Sunday and the assistant coach says he will make time to watch it.

“We will be preparing for the match in Liverpool, but I will certainly dedicate an hour and a half to see it.”
