Inter CEO Beppe Marotta has said that now is not the right time to be talking about the European Super League given the importance of Inter’s upcoming games, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.

Speaking during an interview with Inter TV ahead of Inter’s match against Salernitana on Friday night, via FCInternews, Beppe Marotta explained that there will be time to talk about the European Super League but right now, the football is the most important thing to him and the club.

“There was a strong debate this summer, Inter made very precise statements. There will be time to resume this discussion, but now we are very focused on our sporting goals and on working to make Inter a sustainable club despite the contraction in the market due to Covid.

“We want to recover in the face of the pandemic that has created problems for all the clubs. Are we out of the plans? I don’t want to give a precise answer, these are delicate issues to be addressed in the right place and at the right time.”

Inter are facing the bottom side in Salernitana this evening at San Siro and they must take all three points to get their title challenge back on track.

Beppe Marotta feels that the compacted and difficult schedule in the last two months is a big reason for Inter’s poor form.

“The statistics help you to make a more complete analysis, but it must be said that in January and February there was considerable congestion of matches between clubs and national teams. This is the most difficult time of the year.”

It was put to Beppe Marotta that a lot of Inter players have been out of form lately. He said: “This is true, but we must also look at the good period of what we have shown on the pitch at the beginning of the season.

“Maybe that could have been out of the ordinary. Today we don’t know enough about that but we want to aim for important goals and we want to win games with ambition and the desire to achieve results.”

It is clear that Beppe Marotta has confidence in Simone Inzaghi to get Inter out of the dip in form they have been experiencing lately.

“The club is very happy with the path it has taken, in terms of results and performances. We are confident that this period of difficulty, not a crisis, will be overcome quickly with the coach’s efforts. I can only reaffirm his ability to manage the group and the professionalism that the team has shown.”

There have been recent suggestions that Inter are settling for a top-four finish but Beppe Marotta says that is not the case at all.

“Getting into the top four also means finishing first. In sport you don’t have to be afraid to keep the bar high, ambitions have to be high.

“We have to fight for the second star, we don’t have to hide; that’s the goal. If another team is better we will congratulate them. The reason for the poor form is the calendar.”

Finally, Beppe Marotta was asked what the good performances that led to defeats in the Champions League mean ahead of the summer transfer market.

The Inter CEO said: “In the first place they suggest that we are growing. We got through the group, this should not limit us but it is an achievement. Then the calendar was not favourable to us but we have gathered more experience now. This does not mean that we cannot believe in Liverpool.”
