Inter striker Lautaro Martinez ended his goal drought in emphatic fashion with his hat-trick against Salernitana, and he brought an end to a cycle that had begun after his goal against the same opponent.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, who note that the Argentine’s patch of poor form in front of goal came between the Nerazzurri’s two matches against the newly-promoted side.

Martinez will not have expected to have had to wait until the home fixture against Salernitana to score again in Serie A after he had scored against the newly-promoted team away in December.

The Argentine had been in good form in front of goal, and Inter’s top scorer, when he scored in the 5-0 win in Salerno.

However, since the return from the winter break the 24-year-old has only found the back of the net once, from the penalty spot against Juventus in the Supercoppa Italiana.

The striker’s inability to find the back of the net had been a major factor in his team’s slump in form, and had become a real worry for how long it had dragged on.

However, the team and player will have both felt immense relief at the quality of his display and the emphatic manner in which he announced his return to scoring, even though they never expected to have to wait until the last opponent he had found the back of the net against.
