Legendary former Inter, Bayer Leverkusen, and Bayern Munich defender Lucio feels that his old Nerazzurri coach Jose Mourinho is the best manager he’s ever worked with.

Speaking to German broadcaster Sport1, the Brazilian named the Portuguese tactician, currently in charge of Roma, as the top coach who he had ever played for during his career.

Lucio formed part of a highly formidable Nerazzurri defense which was the bedrock of the club’s most successful season ever, helping the side to a European treble under Mourinho during the 2009-10 campaign.

The Portuguese coach forged a team with excellent chemistry and organization, getting the best out of Lucio as well as many other players to help guide the team to the summit of European football.

Lucio has no doubt that, even after having played under a number of the most impressive coaches in European football during his era, it was Mourinho who left the best impression on him.

“Mourinho was extremely important!” he said. “He was a motivator who brought out the best in every player.”

“He was very demanding,” the former defender added, “but also totally likeable, honest, straightforward. Thanks to him, my teammates and I have had a spectacular season. Jose was the best coach I had in my entire career.”
