The challenge by Salernitana midfielder Ivan Radovanovic on his Inter counterpart Roberto Gagliardini was not enough to warrant a penalty, according to Italian media.
The assessment in today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, is that there was little in the incident which happened in the dying minutes of the Nerazzurri’s Serie A win over the newly-promoted side.
Inter had already put the result truly beyond doubt with the scoreline 5-0 in their favour, but Gagliardini nevertheless appealed for the penalty to be given, feeling that he had been brought down by Radovanovic.
The Serb had made contact with Gagliardini’s calf, and the challenge did seem to put the Nerazzurri midfielder off balance, but in the view of the Corriere it was not heavy enough to cause him to go down and would have been harsh to award as a penalty.
The Corriere also note that the officials did not have a great night overall, including needing the intervention of VAR to award Inter’s fifth goal after the fourth official had wrongly flagged for offside.
