Former AC Milan, Liverpool and Bayern Munich defender Christian Ziege believes that playing against Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday will be a massive undertaking for Inter.

Speaking to Italian news outlet L’Interista, the 50-year-old emphasized how Anfield is a hugely intimidating venue to play at for away teams in Europe, warning the Nerazzurri ahead of their round of sixteen second leg in the Champions League.

Inter put in an encouraging performance against Liverpool in the first leg despite the frustrating 2-0 loss to the Reds, but they had their fans at the San Siro to urge them on.

At Anfield, the Nerazzurri will be playing in one of the most hostile atmospheres that they could encounter, and will have to try and overturn the 2-0 deficit from the first leg while silencing the crowd.

Ziege had experienced this himself during his playing career, and believes that the influence of the crowd at the Reds’ home stadium in European ties is not to be underestimated.

“Anfield affects every team that has to play there,” he said. “It’s one of the reasons why Liverpool are so successful. ”

“Having to compete with this stadium is a real nightmare for any opponent,” he went on, “it’s incredible, with a fantastic crowd, and it was a dream to play there as part of the home team.”
