Italian journalist Paolo Condo believes that the games in hand among the top teams are an overlooked aspect of the Serie A title race.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Condo noted that most pundits rarely account for the fact that Inter and Atalanta each have a game in hand on their main rivals among Serie A’s top five.

Inter did not play their match with Bologna which  was scheduled to be their first match back from the winter break due to COVID cases in the Rossoblu’s squad, and this has meant that until they play that fixture, they will finish each matchday having played one match fewer than AC Milan, Napoli, and Juventus.

Meanwhile, Atalanta also missed their return from the break, against Torino, for similar reasons.

This has led to a situation where the Nerazzurri have been overtaken by both the Rossoneri and the Partenopei in the table on a number of occasions, but where it has been unclear whether this would hold due to their game in hand.

“Among other things, nobody talks about these games in hand,” Condo said, “I don’t understand it, who knows when these matches will be played.”
