Both yellow cards issued to Alexis Sanchez in yesterday’s Champions League clash with Liverpool were correct, according to Italian media.

Today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport analyzed the decisions in the match, and gave the verdict that the player can have no complaints for his sending off.

Sanchez’s first booking came for a late tackle on Reds midfielder Thiago Alcantara, which the Corriere argues was reckless enough that, had the Chilean been shown a straight red, the VAR would have no reason to overturn it.

In the second half, immediately following the game’s only goal by Lautaro Martinez to give his team hope in the tie, Sanchez went in with a slide tackle on Liverpool midfielder Fabinho.

The 33-year-old did get to the ball before the Liverpool player, but his follow-through caught the opponent on the ankle with his studs, and in the view of the Corriere the second yellow card was more than warranted.
