Former AC Milan and England coach Fabio Capello believes that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi decided not to risk too much in the end against Liverpool when he considered his substitutions.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the former coach gave his thoughts on Inzaghi’s second-half substitutions as the Nerazzurri won 1-0 on the night but went out 2-1 on aggregate from the Champions League.

Inter were in an awkward situation in the closing stages of their Champions League round of sixteen second leg against the Reds.

Lautaro Martinez’s second half goal had given them a foothold and the hope of a comeback, but after the sending-off of Alexis Sanchez, the team had conceded much of the possession to the hosts, who looked composed seeing the game out.

Inzaghi brought on some substitutions to try and given his team some fresh legs to keep their shape at a numerical disadvantage and counterattack, but didn’t really seems to push for the result.

Capello stated that “You can try and blame the coach who didn’t take many risks with his substitutions, but he knows his players and he knows what their objectives are, so he made a calculation.”
