Inter defender Stefan de Vrij was substituted off before the second half of the Nerazzurri’s Champions League clash with Liverpool due to a strain to his left calf.

This according to Italian news outlet FCInterNews, who report that the Dutchman experienced the strain during the first half and that it was decided to take him off to prevent the problem from worsening.

De Vrij started in his usual position in the centre of the defense against the Reds, but at half-time he did not take to the pitch, with Danilo D’Ambrosio coming on in his place, and Milan Skriniar moving into the central position.

It remains to be seen how serious the issue is for the 30-year-old, but it does not appear to be a serious injury, and rather looks as though he was taken off as a precaution.

Further tests will be performed when de Vrij returns to Italy to determine how long he will be out with the injury if at all, with a number of important matches just on the horizon.
