Inter striker Lautaro Martinez feels that his team were not fortunate in the key moments of their Champions League round of sixteen tie against Liverpool.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, the 24-year-old admitted that he felt frustrated that the team could not progress against the Reds, but reflected that this is how it is at the top level of European competition.

Inter managed to beat Liverpool 1-0 on the night at Anfield, but the result was not enough for them on aggregate given that the Reds had won the first leg 2-0.

Martinez scored an impressive effort from range midway through the second half to give the Nerazzurri hope in the tie, but a red card for Alexis Sanchez just moments later put the tie beyond their reach.

The Argentine doesn’t feel that the team were let down by their performance, but rather sees it as an accumulation of a few finer details not going their way.

“It’s certainly a difficult blow for us,” the striker said of exiting the competition. “We played two excellent matches at the San Siro and then today, they have quality players but we did our job with humility.”

“After the goal there was a strong enthusiasm,”he went on, “then we had a player sent off as was the case in Madrid.”

Martinez reflected that “These are details that change the matches, we need to improve in these aspects because in the Champions League these details are decisive.”

“In the first leg we played excellently for seventy minutes,” he said, “with many chances to score, then we conceded two avoidable goals.”

“Today we played with character and determination, but it wasn’t enough,” he continued. “These are the details that are decisive.”

Asked whether this win could be a jumping-off point, the striker said that “We hope so, we’ll work to keep bringing Inter to the top. Now we have to think about the league and the Coppa Italia.”
