Inter striker Lautaro Martinez believes that he and his teammates put in a good performance but also showed how they need to improve in their Champions League round of sixteen tie against Liverpool.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the Argentine said that he was happy with the performance to beat the Reds on the night, but also expressed the desire to build on this by improving further.

Inter gave the travelling Nerazzurri supporters something to cheer for by scoring midway through the second half of the second leg clash at Anfield, giving themselves real hope in the tie.

The sending off of Alexis Sanchez not long after their goal effectively put the tie beyond them, with their 2-0 loss in the first leg having always made progression in the second leg a difficult ask for the Nerazzurri.

Martinez is proud of the way that they performed to win on the night, but also focused on improving as they did show their weaknesses through the tie to go out.

“Today we did what we said we would after Salernitana,” he said. “we showed character, personality, the desire to go through.”

He went on that “We did so at San Siro too, but we conceded two goals that were harsh on us. We took the lead at a difficult stadium with a goal that gave us a lot of enthusiasm, but then went down to ten.”

He emphasized that “We have to turn the page and move forward, we’re out of the Champions League but we have the league and the Coppa Italia, we must learn from our mistakes and try to improve and look forward.”

“I scored a hat-trick on Friday and it was important to get back to scoring,” the striker continued, “I always try to give my heart to this club that has given me confidence, as well as to my teammates and to the staff.”

“Even today we’ve shown that we are a top team but that we still have to grow,” he concluded.
