Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson wasn’t expecting a straightforward Champions League round of sixteen tie against Inter, and wasn’t surprised that the two-legged tie was as close as it was.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset after the match, the Brazilian gave his thoughts on the match in which the Reds had lost on the night but gone through on aggregate, and also complimented striker Lautaro Martinez’s winning goal.

Inter were not able to overturn the 2-0 deficit from the first leg against the Reds, though they did manage to take some confidence away from the second leg after handing Liverpool their first home defeat in over a year.

The Reds are among the most formidable teams in Europe, having won the Champions League in 2019 and then the Premier League in 2020, and they are currently among the front-runners in both competitions.

However, former Roma keeper Alisson never believed that just because of their status they would be able to easily beat the Italian champions.

“We feel very satisfied even if we could have done better,” he said, “but not that much given that Inter are a great team, they’re very strong and they’re fighting for the Scudetto in Italy.”

“We knew it would be difficult after the draw,” he went on, “they are very strong defensively and they have a lot of quality in midfield. Lautaro scored a great goal.”
