Milan Mayor Beppe Sala is hoping that Inter and AC Milan don’t decide to build their new stadium in a different area than the San Siro.

Speaking to the press, as reported by FCInterNews, the Mayor expressed apprehension at the possibility that the city could be left with an empty San Siro stadium in the event that the teams build a new stadium elsewhere.

Inter and Milan are pressing forward with their new stadium project, but delays involving the possibility of a long public debate have forced them to consider changing their plans and building it in a new location.

The clubs are aiming to build the new stadium in the location of the current San Siro, demolishing the existing to make way, and had received approval from the city council following municipal elections in October.

However, this has sparked some opposition in the city, and the clubs have reportedly started to consider choosing a new location where they could begin construction sooner.

“I hope that the new stadium will be built,” Sala said, “however, given the timing and the fact that there are appeals, we can safely say that there won’t be a new stadium for the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics.”

He went on that “If the teams intend to look at other options than the San Siro, it’s within their rights, but obviously it would be a shame.”

“I can’t do more than this,” he added. “I’m very worried about being left with anempty stadium, without Milan and Inter, since I don’t see potential other use for it.”

“We continue the dialogue with respect to the rules,” he added, “but it is no coincidence that few stadiums have been constructed in Italy. Doing this is complicated in our country.”
