Former Inter striker Alessandro Altobelli has said that he would have put Edin Dzeko on the pitch during Inter’s Champions League second leg against Liverpool on Tuesday night, according to a report in the Italian print media today.

As has been reported by Corriere della Sera, the Inter great clearly thinks that he would have acted differently to Simone Inzaghi had he been on the touchline at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Inter found themselves down to 10 players after Alexis Sanchez was sent off but still needing a goal to force extra-time. Simone Inzaghi chose to put Joaquin Correa on rather than Edin Dzeko.

From the two games played against the English side, Inter deserved more. When there were ten players left, I would have dared to put Dzeko on, however, Inzaghi cannot be criticised because the goal is the Scudetto.”

Despite the aggregate defeat to Liverpool, Alessandro Altobelli believes that it can be a stimulus for the title race ahead after Inter’s poor recent form.

The success in Liverpool remains a great achievement and must be a stimulus. In the last league matches, Inter have struggled, allowing themselves to be overtaken. It is time to accelerate, they have shown that they are a top European team, they can and must do it.”

In terms of who Inter are fighting in that title race, Alessandro Altobelli feels that AC Milan are the team to beat, with Napoli and Juventus not quite as dangerous.

Milan are the team to beat, we will fight with them until the end of the championship. They have more continuity than the others, they have shown that they know how to manage head-to-head matches well, while Napoli tends to get lost in the games that matter. But keep an eye on Juve, if they beat Inter they will come back.”
