Former Argentina striker Mario Alberto Kempes has said that Lautaro Martinez can now reach any goal that he wants to having broken out of his poor form, according to a report in the Italian media today.
Speaking during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport today, Mario Alberto Kempes explained that the confidence that Simone Inzaghi showed in Lautaro Martinez was a big part of his return to form for Inter against Salernitana and Liverpool.
“Toro did not let his guard down and continued to shoot when he had the opportunity, as is always the right thing to do. But if in those delicate moments the coach hadn’t deployed him, then he would not be there.
“There was the risk of becoming demoralised. With Inzaghi, on the other hand, the opposite happened: the substitution in the Champions League was a bit strange, but he always insisted on Lautaro. And at the right moment, he got the reward.”
Lautaro Martinez scored a wonderful goal at Anfield to give Inter a 1-0 victory but it was not enough to see them progress in the Champions League.
Mario Alberto Kempes says that scoring a goal like that in a stadium like that is something that stays with a striker.
“Scoring a goal of this beauty in one of the most impressive stadiums in the world stays with you. It gives you energy: from now on a new phase begins and Lautaro can reach any goal.
“But I liked all of Inter in the Champions League, not only him. I saw an intelligent team that played with great tension, courage, self-love. The goal is not accidental, it was the reward of everyone’s work. But then there were ten of them left and everything became much more complicated.”
Inter are linked with another Argentine striker, Juventus’ Paulo Dybala. Mario Kempes feels he should only leave the Bianconeri if he no longer feels wanted there.
“Think with your head: you will hear many voices around you, but the decision is yours. If you feel you can still make a difference in Turin, then you will do well to renew regardless of the money.
“If, on the other hand, you felt that you are no longer wanted, then you should look around for real, without precluding anything.”
Even Inter are a team that he shouldn’t preclude, Mario Kempes said: “Not even Inter, of course. Indeed in Milan they would make a great match with Lautaro. I saw the chaos after Vlahovic from Fiorentina went to Juve, but a player always has the right to choose the best for himself.”
