Former Inter midfielder Esteban Cambiasso has said that Edin Dzeko and Felipe Caicedo were clearly not fit enough to come off the bench against Liverpool on Tuesday night, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.

Speaking whilst on Sky Sport in Italy, via FCInter1908, the former Argentina midfielder explained that based on what Simone Inzaghi had said after the match, the two strikers that he left on the bench must have not been fit enough to play a part.

“From Inzaghi’s words it was clear that Dzeko and Caicedo were not yet fit at Anfield. He was rational, he explained the changes in this way.”

Inter went 1-0 up through Lautaro Martinez’s strike in the 61st minute and they then needed one more goal to force extra time against Liverpool, having lost the first leg 2-0 at San Siro.

Their chances of doing that dropped when Alexis Sanchez received his second yellow card of the game. Simone Inzaghi chose to bring on Joaquin Correa and various other midfielders rather than playing Edin Dzeko or Felip Caicedo.
