Former Inter forward Antonio Cassano has commended the Nerazzurri after they were eliminated by Liverpool in the Champions League in midweek, losing 2-1 on aggregrate.

Having fallen to a 2-0 defeat at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in the first leg, Inter gave themselves hope of a comeback through Lautaro Martinez’s stunning strike at Anfield, but an Alexis Sanchez red card made their task more difficult and ultimately they couldn’t find a second goal to level the tie.

Appearing on the Twitch stream of fellow former Inter striker Christian Vieri, as reported by L’Interista.it, Cassano admitted that he expected the gulf in class between the Italian champions and the Premier League club to be wider, and that the Nerazzurri could learn from this elimination.

“Inter played openly and I liked that a lot in the return leg, I was expecting a much bigger gap between Liverpool and Inter but I haven’t seen that in these two games,” the ex-Roma and Italy forward declared.

“Liverpool did not steal the victory, it was deserved, but Inter showed something, and they need this defeat to grow.

“Of the Italian teams I saw in Europe, they impressed me the most, along with Atalanta. They can leave Liverpool with their heads held high,” Cassano added.

Inter now turn their attention back to domestic duties, as they face Torino in Serie A on Sunday.
