Inter Defender Matteo Darmian: “We Have To Scrape All The Energy We Have”

Inter defender Matteo Darmian believes that the team must make a big push to get through the remaining matches in the run-in of their season.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN after the Nerazzurri’s 1-1 draw against Torino in Serie A, the 32-year-old emphasized the importance of getting the most that they can out of the energy that they have.
The Nerazzurri looked tired and out of sorts from long stretches of their match against Torino, allowing the Granata to impose their preferred tempo to proceedings with their organized and physical high press.
The worry to this, apart from the fact that the team dropped two precious points in the Scudetto race, will be that this will be the standard of performances in the closing stages of a campaign that has been packed and exhausting.
Darmian believes that the Nerazzurri must to everything that they possibly can to avoid this outcome, however.
“We have an important opportunity,” he said, “we have to recover to better face our next match against Fiorentina, which will be very difficult.”
“Then with the break we can recover some energy, but from here to the end we have to scrape every last bit of mental and physical energy from the bottom of the barrel. It’s an incentive to fight to the end for us, we have the quality.”
“In the first half they were a bit better than us,” he admitted of the match. “We suffered, we didn’t do well on the second balls and we weren’t lucid in playing our game.”
“In the second half we went out and created many chances, finally taking advantage of one at the very end,” he continued.
The defender suggested that “If we had equalized earlier we could have brought it home but we knew it would be a difficult match. Torino have great physicality and press man to man.”
Darmian stressed that “We’re definitely focused on what we have to do. We’ve dropped points along the way and now we have to recover. These will be very important games and we must try to win.”
