Italian journalist Paolo Condo believes that Ajax goalkeeper will have to get back to his best form after showing signs of rust in recent matches.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, the journalist suggested that the Cameroonian still needs to reach full match-sharpness after spending a long time out through a suspension.

Onana faced a one-year doping suspension which halted his progress, having been seen as one of European’s football’s most promising young players in his position prior to the ban.

The 25-year-old returned at the beginning of November, but he has not enjoyed a seamless transition back into playing, having made some high-profile errors representing Cameroon at the African Cup of Nations.

The keeeper was largely at fault for the solitary goal scored by Benfica which saw the Dutch champions eliminated from the Champions League yesterday, and this has only heightened the sense that he is not at his sharpest.

Condo argued that “He got very rusty, he is partly responsible for the Benfica goal against Ajax.”

“He’s a very good goalkeeper, but from an Inter viewpoint, given that he will wear that shirt next season, he will have to play a lot to get rid of that rust,” he added.
