Italian journalist Fabio Caressa believes that Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi has impressed in his first campaign in charge whether or not the team prevail in the Scudetto race.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Maresca praised the job that has been done by the 45-year-old since arriving in the summer and suggested that the idea that this squad should be Scudetto favourites is unrealistic.

Inzaghi joined Inter from Lazio last summer with the difficult job of replacing Antonio Conte during a summer of significant upheaval in the transfer market.

The losses of Achraf Hakimi, Christian Eriksen, and Romelu Lukaku were mitigated by new arrivals, but only to a certain extend, and the expectation placed on the new coach was to achieve a top four finish and make the knockout rounds of the Champions League.

Inzaghi has seemingly guided the team to this objective barring a late disaster, and Caressa believes that he should be applauded even if he cannot make good on the Scudetto promise that the team showed in the fall.

“Inzaghi has had a great season even if he doesn’t win the Scudetto thanks to some mistakes,” he said. “The problem for me is one of mentality.”

He added that “Inter were a bit overestimated as a squad, in addition to tiredness being a factor.”
