Former AC Milan manager Fatih Terim has said that Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu has become a phenomenon, according to a report in the Italian media.

Speaking during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Turkish coach did not hold back in his praise of the Nerazzurri midfielder.

“We have many important players of absolute value. We can count on and trust, for example, Hakan Calhanoglu who in my opinion has now become a phenomenon, a Serie A champion.”

Hakan Calhanoglu was a young player in the Bundesliga when Fatih Terim gave him a chance to play in the Turkish national team for the first time.

“When he was 19, in 2013 and played in Hamburg, I gave him the national team shirt for the first time because I had no doubts. I know his potential well and I believe he can still improve and do more.”

The nation will be pinning its hopes on Hakan Calhanoglu and his teammates this evening as they take on Portugal in a World Cup qualification playoff.

The winner of that game will go on to play against the winner of Italy vs North Macedonia in the final playoff match to determine who will get to take part in the 2022 Qatar World Cup later on in the year.

The game kicks off in Porto at 19:45 local time.
