The Italy defence will have Alessandro Bastoni at the heart of it in future competitive matches, according to a report in the Italian media today.

As has been reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport today, the Inter defender has shown with his club form and the way he performed against North Macedonia that he can lead the Italian defence when Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci retire.

The Juventus duo were both unavailable for Italy’s World Cup qualifier playoff last night against North Macedonia, which they lost 1-0 thanks to a 92nd-minute winner for the away side in Palermo.

Alessandro Bastoni was one of the very few players in the Italy side that did not come in for any serious criticism after the game. He did his job effectively but the midfielders and forwards did not put their chances away.

It is hard to imagine the Inter defender not being Italy’s senior defender in the coming years.
