Italian journalist Fabrizio Biasin believes that current Italy head coach Roberto Mancini can build the Azzurri back up despite their recent failure to qualify for the World Cup.

Writing in his column in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Libero, Biasin gave the view that there is no reason to get rid of the coach, who is still well-placed to build for the future around players like Inter duo Nicolo Barella and Alessandro Bastoni.

Less than twelve months ago, the Azzurri were winning the Euros with players like Bastoni and especially Barella playing an important role.

Former Nerazzurri coach Mancini had masterminded a team that had gotten the better of opponents like Belgium, Spain, and England on the way to lifting the trophy.

Now, there are serious doubts raised about whether Mancini can continue with his project, but Biasin believes that it would make the most sense to stay on with him.

He writes, “Many would like to see Roberto Mancini brought out to the public square and jettisoned, and yes he got it wrong the other night, but in these past four years he has done great things.”

“We expect him to resign,” he continues, “and that the Palazzo rejects this and asks him to continue. Obviously, only if he feels like it. That fact is that the alternatives are not very convincing and it would be useless to replace him.”

Biasin goes on that “There are few players of certain quality, one is Verratti (the one real world-class player for the Azzurri), then Chiesa (and we hope he will recover quickly).”

He then goes on to name “Barella (we hope that sooner or later we can rest a bit), Donnarumma (we hope he wakes up), Bastoni (yes, his quality is certain).”
