Napoli will not activate the clause in forward Dries Mertens’ contract extending his time at the club another season amid links to Inter in the summer.

This according to Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it, who report that the Partenopei could still extend the Belgian’s current deal, but that it would have to be at lower wages than he currently earns.

Mertens is a target for the Nerazzurri who are seeking an experienced forward who could bolster their attack for low cost, likely on a free transfer.

The 34-year-old had also been a target two summers ago, but he had decided to instead continue his time in Naples by extending his contract by two years, with the Partenopei having the option of extending it by one season.

However, Napoli are reportedly not set to exercise this option, and it remains to be seen whether he and his club will be able to agree a new deal at lower wages than the €5 million net per season which he currently earns.
