Andre Onana is not necessarily expecting to be the automatic starter right away upon arriving at Inter and expects healthy competition with captain Samir Handanovic.

This according to Italian news outlet FCInterNews, who report that the Cameroonian is ready to fight for his spot in goal as long as Handanovic is at the club.

It remains to be seen whether Handanovic decides to extend his contract at Inter, which expires at the end of June as it stands, but he is reportedly in talks with the club and would be especially amenable if he is offered regular football.

Should the Slovenian stay on, his future role is in the balance, and according to FCInterNews he could be anything from the regular starter for the whole of next season to simply an influential dressing room figure while Onana settles in.

The 25-year-old will arrive as Handanovic’s long-term successor when he is signed on a free transfer from Ajax in the summer, but he may not take the current captain’s place in goal on a full-time basis immediately.
