Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has said that Romelu Lukaku has an important role at the club and they can’t buy or sell players regardless, according to a report in the Italian media.

Speaking during his press conference ahead of Chelsea’s next Premier League match, via FCInternews, Thomas Tuchel was asked about the incessant rumours around Romelu Lukaku and his desire to return to Inter in the summer.

The German coach firstly pointed out that the club can’t buy or sell players right now as the owner, Roman Abramovich, has been sanctioned by the UK government for his alleged links to Russian President Vladimir Putin and the war on Ukraine.

“The situation at the moment is that we can’t talk to the players, we can’t sell and we can’t buy: right now we don’t need to think about it, these are the players we have at our disposal.”

The former Paris Saint Germain boss then explained that the Belgian striker has a very important role at the club even if it isn’t the exact role that he would like to play.

“Romelu still has an important role. Maybe that’s not the role he wants to play and I understand it perfectly. He used his time to disconnect for a while, had a week off, then came back with us.

“I feel very motivated, very strong in training, very involved when we play games. He is a winner and will remain important to us. He played a good game in Middlesbrough, a great boost for all of us and for him personally; at this moment there is no room for discontent, disappointment and distraction. We need everyone, every player, including Romelu.”

Romelu Lukaku has made it clear in the press that he wishes to return to Inter.
