Inter legend Beppe Bergomi has said that Simone Inzaghi told him he had never coached a forward as strong as Romelu Lukaku, according to a report in the Italian media.

Speaking during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former Inter defender spoke glowingly about the Belgian striker who left Inter to join Chelsea last summer at the end of the transfer window.

He feels that had he been kept at the club, Inter would be a totally different team now.

“In Italy he was the best. I still think that with him Inter would be another team. With all due respect for Dzeko and the others, Lukaku has a perfect impact on our league in terms of intensity, power, speed and leadership. He had that Inter in his hand.”

When Simone Inzaghi joined the club as head coach and took over from Antonio Conte, he had a short period of time where Romelu Lukaku was in training with the rest of the team and could have stayed at the club.

He clearly left a very big impression on the former Lazio coach, as Beppe Bergomi says the coach told him after the striker had left for the Premier League.

“Inzaghi confessed to me that, even just for those ten days in which he had him in Appiano at the start of the retreat, he had never coached such a strong forward.”
