Legendary former Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero feels that the decision to award Inter a retake of their penalty yesterday was ultimately a correct one.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, Del Piero suggested that based on the laws of the game, there was no ambiguity that the spot kick had to be retaken for encroachment.

Juventus players felt hard done by when, after a lengthy and dramatic sequence which saw Hakan Calhanoglu have a penalty saved, put the rebound away, and then see that effort disallowed, he was in the end given another chance from the spot.

The VAR spotted early encroachment by Bianconeri defender Matthijs de Ligt into the penalty area before the Turk took his first penalty, and so ruled that the penalty be retaken.

The moment proved to be even more significant given that it was the solitary goal in a 1-0 win by the Nerazzurri, and in Del Piero’s view, it was the right decision.

“It’s is a foul and a yellow card by the letter of the law,” he said. “The referee’s error is to call for a foul on the rebounded shot.”
