Italian journalist Raffaele Auriemma believes that if Juventus are to complain about the refereeing in their 1-0 loss to Inter on Sunday, then the officiating in last season’s edition of the fixture is fair game.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, Auriemma responded to a social media post by Bianconeri midfielder Adrien Rabiot insinuating that referee Massimiliano Irrati had been Inter’s “12th man” on the night.

Inter’s win at the Allianz Stadium was not without controversy regarding the officiating, with the Nerazzurri scoring the only goal from a penalty which was awarded by VAR and then ordered to be retaken after the first effort was missed.

Meanwhile, the Bianconeri felt that they had a credible appeal for a spot kick of their own turned down, and also that Inter striker Lautaro Martinez should have been sent off for a second yellow.

The meeting of the two fierce rivals is often one that produces controversial incidents of this nature, and officiating and VAR in Serie A have been hotly debated in Serie A in general this season.

For Auriemma, however, it is fair to consider that last season the shoe was on the other foot as Inter had several harsh decisions go against them as they lost 3-2 away to the Biacnoneri in one of the final matches of the season.

“It would have been very nice if Rabiot, who could have been sent off on Sunday, had also gone on record as saying that last season they won against Inter last season twelve against eleven,” he said.

“Consistency dictates that if you lose eleven against twelve and complain, you must also admit when you win twelve against eleven.”

“This would be an admission that would be accepted by everyone,” he added.
