Former Inter coach Rafael Benitez has said that the top three teams in Serie A have all got the same chance of winning the Scudetto this season, according to a report in the Italian media today.

Speaking during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport today, the Spanish coach explained that there is so much balance between AC Milan, Napoli and Inter at the top that he can’t choose a favourite to win the title this season.

“It will be uncertain until the end where Milan, Napoli and Inter have the same chances. I think Juve are out of the game by now, but I’m sure they will go to the Champions League.”

Rafael Benitez was asked what it would take for Inter to get back among the elite teams in Europe and start challenging to win the Champions League again. He feels the key is continuity.

“They must have continuity over the years, I was struck by what I saw against Liverpool. Unfortunately, in these cases, mistakes are paid for immediately. The important thing, however, is to always remain at certain levels, they have the quality and economic stability to do so.”

Rafael Benitez’s time in charge at Inter did not last very long and he says that there were no resources available to him to try and improve the squad.

“My career is based on improving the team, even with the transfer market. There were no resources to renew the squad. The case of Coutinho was emblematic, unknown at the time but which later proved to be an important capital gain.”

Sticking with money, he feels that money is the reason Serie A is lagging behind the likes of La Liga and the Premier League.

“It’s always a question of money. Whoever is richer wins, and by winning you become even more. A few teams have created a circle that is difficult to enter.

“It is not a question of academies or foreigners. The spending power makes the difference: in England it is almost normal to buy a pair of fullbacks for €50 million each, and sometimes even that is not enough.”
